asked on

what is the configuratino between VMware ESXi 5 and vSphere Client

I have just received access to a VM using vSphere Client.  It seems to have a VM created and Centos 7 installed.  I was also told I need to download and install VMware ESXi 5 locally using VMware Workstation, which I have done and it seems to be up and running (although I'm sure about configured).

I am wondering what the relationship is between the two?  My IT team just pushed VMware vSphere client to my computer and it seems to work (the console comes up).  What is the purpose of VMware ESXi 5 in this case?  is it needed? it seems that everything is running in the vSphere Client just fine and I don't see the relationship between the two.

If someone could please clarify this relationship it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Scott

So are you saying that the VSphere Client communicates with the virtual machine running on ESXi?

If that is true I must have things confused because it would seem pointless for me to need to have ESXi installed on my local computer using VMware workstation when the whole purpose of this setup is to get me access to a VM running on a server.   In this case ESXi must be running on the server?  I may have misunderstood my IT guy.

Basically what I'm taking from your comments is, ESXi runs on the remote server and VSphere runs on my local computer and allows for configuration and console access of the VM running in ESXi on the remote server.
