HP Pavilion g4 Laptop can't find media for factory restore

I have been working on and off on my daughter's laptop and still cannot resolve the slowness and locking up. I ran Malwarebytes 5 times and each time it came up with over 300 PUP infections. I tried to remove them, but when I clicked on the button, a wheel appeared and just sat there and spun for hours. When I rebooted and ran Malwarebytes again, the same thing happened. I tried to use the Windows 8.1 restore and each time I tried it could not find the restore files which are located on the D: drive.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I would prefer to do a factory restore so that it can be restored with all the bells and whistles, but if not, then a format with a windows disk maybe in order. Is there a way to create a factory restore disk? burn it to a CD/DVD? and then reboot it and restore it?

Are you still running the Win8.1 that came with it or have you upgraded to Win10?

Thank you for the responses! Tapan, I cannot do a refresh either as I do not have a Windows 8.1 OS nor can the computer find it when I try to do a restore, refresh or even just a restore point.

John, I am going to try your solution first as that will get me to W8.1 and then I can do an upgrade to W10 as rindi suggested in his response.
If the PC has already been upgraded to Windows 10, you won't have to return to windows 8 first. You can install Windows 10 directly. If the PC hasn't already been upgraded to Windows 10, then you'd have to buy the Windows 10 License, as the upgrade is no longer free. Also then just buy the License and install Windows 10 directly. You won't have to take the long way via Windows 8 first.
