exchange 2013
In Exchange 2013, outlook anywhere is now the default connection method for internal and external clients. Do you need to publish EWS to the public in order to get Outlook anywhere or OWA or Active Sync to be operational?
What if you don't make EWS accessible from these internet clients?
will autodiscover FAIL? I believe EWS has nothing to with autodiscover
also for ex. if we don't configure autodiscover, we can still go for OAB Virtaul directory

EWS is used for 3rd party application access, among other things. I cannot think of any reason why you wouldn't publish it. It can (and should) be published with same FQDN and certificate as outlook anywhere and OWA.
(unless you're using layer 7 HLB with service separation ---- )
