Windows wants to reinstall Office Home and Student 2007 but can't

Good morning,

Recently whenever I click on an office document, Windows 7 wants to reinstall that program: (e.g. click on a Word document)
1) Windows Installer .. preparing to install
2) Configuration Process ... configuring Microsoft Home and Office 2007
3) Please wait .. (looking for files)
4) Word pops up with Menus etc then popup says "Microsoft Word has not been installed for the current user. Please run setup to install the application."

Somewhere along the line I get a message like "There was a problem sending the command to the program."

I have the original CD. I have all the packaging, product key etc. I have tried to install, repair, and uninstall.

Uninstall gives me
Error 1402.Setup  cannot open the registry key
UNKNOWN\Components\1FA18F7974E099CD0AF18C3B1A1EE8\00002119F20000000000000000F01FEC
Verify that you have sufficient permissions to access the registry or contact Microsoft Support Services...etc
Then it "rolls back" the uninstall.

I have done scans with AVG (paid) and SuperAntiSpyware (free). I *may* have had Office 2003 installed a few years ago. This is an old Core 2 Duo Thinkpad Lenovo. It looks like Windows 7 was factory installed in 2010 (based on Belarc advisor listing). Another problem (may/may not be related) is that MS Updates aren't working (run forever). The machine may have run out of disk space at one point.

I hope you can help!
Thanks
Dave

Thanks for the advice. I have run the SFC and it found some errors, but my problem(s) are still there. I will have to plan to do a Repair Install. I went looking for my Windows 7 CD (I usually keep a baggie with the CDs etc) and discovered that I bought the laptop with XP installed! I think I must have had Windows 7 installed in 2010 by my local computer shop. I can see now that Belarc shows an *OEM* version for Win 7!

I don't have a Win7 CD in the baggie so I will need to download an iso before doing a repair install. Do I need to get an OEM version of the iso image? I'm thinking that maybe I should buy a vanilla Win7 key instead of trying to match up my key with the right version of Wiin7. What do you think?
You need the Windows 7 DVD for your machine. If not available and you purchase a vanilla Windows 7 license then:

(a) back everything up as you need to reinstall.

(b) know where the manufacturer's drivers (BIOS, Chipset, Video, Audio, Networking and all other) to install in the system.
@dbrunton Thanks for the comments. I have run ccleaner and chkdsk without incident. I will look into the support article that you suggested.
As far as the Windows 7 installation disk goes, this should get you there:

Have you tried doing a System Restore to an older date?  If you can go before when the problem started then you may resolve it this way.

It would be wise to sort out if you really own a Windows 7 license or not.  If you do own it, it would be wise to have the number recorded.  You can use keyfinder from magicaljellybean.com to find what license key is in use on your computer.

Actual solution required editing the registry and installing updates as described.
