Maybe your Safari version is not supported.

To get these features, use a browser that works with Gmail.

Switch views
Switch from Basic HTML view to Standard view: Open Gmail using this link. If your browser isn't supported, this view might not work.

It worked fine, and just suddenly a couple of weeks ago just changed.
You might try an older version of Safari. Sometimes applications get confused by the latest version of a browser. What is your OS & version of Safari?

I've checked for updates, it said I have the most current one.
Try this

Could you please temporarily disable the Anti-Virus and if you have any labs turned on, try opening Gmail by clicking here.

In addition, please try this troubleshooter that may help resolve the issue.

It's a Mac I don't have an AV
Did you try the link for opening Gmail? It turns off labs.

Do you have the latest Mac O/S updates? If your Mac is old it may not qualify for the latest updates.

During installation, your Mac might restart several times. It then performs some initial setup tasks in the background. While those tasks are underway, activities such as using Spotlight or Mail might not seem as fast as they were before.
If you don't want macOS Sierra to download automatically, deselect “Download newly available updates in the background” in App Store preferences.
If your Mac doesn't meet the Sierra requirements, you might be able to upgrade to El Capitan, the previous version of the Mac operating system.
If you previously downloaded El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks, or another earlier version of OS X, you can download it again from the Purchased tab of the App Store.

Yes, This Mac is pretty old.

So I can't get the latest Safari , but I can download other browses. (chrome, firefox etc..)
Yes that's likely the case but I have seen Macs so old that they couldn't download Chrome either.
