How to remove a failed domain controller from an SBS 2008 domain
I have a failed Server 2008 domain controller that is part of an SBS 2008 domain. Are there any special steps involved in removing this server from the domain since it's an SBS domain?
My plan is to remove it from AD and then re-install from scratch with the same server name - any gotchas that I need to look out for? I've never done this before.

2 servers in total. Server 1 is up and it's the main DC with all roles and exchange. Server 2 is the failed one and it was a file server, SQL, and secondary DC.
When it comes to removing a failed DC from an SBS domain it's the same as a non-SBS domain. PROVIDED the SBS server isn't the failed server (which, if I'm reading correctly, it's not).
When you have two servers, one DC is still alive, it is easy to make the second DC fresh install and alive again. Follow the thread link which i sent earller.

Just to double check - since the failed DC is not the SBS server I can just use the command “Dcpromo / AllowDomainControllerReins tall:yes” after re-installing the OS and the same server name. There is no need to do the metadata cleanup?
Yes if you want to just recover it doesn't requires metadata cleanup.

Do I have to run Windows Updates, or install any Roles before running the dcpromo command OR can I run DCPROMO as soon as I have a fresh install running?

I was finally able to run DCPROMO but unfortunately it didn't work. The error says that this computer can't join the domain because the specified account already exists.
I ran the "DCPROMO /AllowDomainControllerRein stall:yes" command from a powershell window.
What should I do next?

Can you provide a guide on how to perform metadata cleanup on Server 2008.

To remove the Windows 2008 DC, if you have an dc where in all the FSMO roles are transferred and DNS are transferred properly. Then you can remove this domain controller gracefully. If it is unrecoverable then you can perform metadata cleanup here on the server and then add and promote the DC.
