asked on
accessing the windows\csc folder
Hi, We have a few new users that have come across from another business and will be situated in our offices.
the story
we have an SBS and a domain called domain1
users come from another office 4 hours away and will be soley based in our offices. they are attached to domain2
the new users have roaming profiles. and as such, the laptop sync's the mydocs etc back to there server. As the new users will only be visiting the old office once a month. There are concerns that the mydoc's, etc aren't being backed up to the server.
My thoughts were to use a cloud based backup system we use on other laptop users. The issue I have, is that I need to access the windows\CSC folder. but it asks to change the permissions of the folder.
I spoke to the IT support for the other office. and the guy said that this would mess up a sync the next time they go back to there original office.
If this is true, how can I backup the user folders in the csc folder ?

Connect your remote users to your office via VPN and Sync over VPN (may require manual sync requests).
The CSC folder doesn't store files by recognizable names. You can GUESS what they are and rename once you copy out, but I would stay away from altering the SCS folder.

Hi, there is no link between the two companies/offices such as trusted domain or vpn.
It shouldn't be to much of an issue to setup a vpn for the client. I would say it's more of a pain, where as a automated backup would be easier.
I would like to still look at the backup option first.
When you say the files don't have noticeable names, would that mean even if I did back it up. I would just see a lot of rubbished file names, but with content ?

If not, then the roaming profiles & sync won't matter, because they will go to the domain they belong to, and the sync will only happen on that domain. If there is a trust, then it is a matter of if they authenticate to their correct domain.
There are a lot of other options for what you want to accomplish, depending on these answers..
