The thing is size is determined by the aspect ratio.
That's incorrect.  Aspect ratio is not size.  4:3 is a ratio, as is 400:300.

I also object to the point distribution.  I rather have the question deleted, as there are many other questions similar to this.  Either that or distribute the question more evenly, since the asker did not choose a solution for their needs.
The aspect ratio of an image describes the proportional relationship between its width and its height.
The bigger width or height the bigger the megs if you like.
When the video uses 4.3  or 16:9. often dependent on the video format this effects the overall output size of the video when converting from mpeg ( For example, a PAL DVD with a full frame image may contain a video resolution of 720×576 ) to mp4 or avi.640x480
Standard aspect ratio of  4:3:  options are 320x240, 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 with 1024 the largest output in megs
Widescreen aspect ratio 16:9:  options are 640x360, 800x450, 960x540, >> largest>1024x576, 1280x720, and 1920x1080
DVD format mpeg use 4.3 with a video scale 720 x
Standard 4:3: 320x240, 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768
Widescreen 16:9: 640x360, 800x450, 960x540, 1024x576, 1280x720, and 1920x1080

serialband as you offered ffmpeg read this to familiarise yourself.

Not too many folks use that.
You just cant win helping to close a question fairly there is always one who will complain.

Aspect raitio is still a ratio.  4 pixels by 3 pixels is still 4:3, just as 400 pixels by 300 pixels is still 4:3, same aspect ratio, different size.

If you're thinking size, they can be different aspect ratios.  300 pixels by 400 pixels is the same size as 400 x 300.  600x200 is also the same size, but has a different aspect ratio.  They all have 120000 pixels per frame, the same size, but they have different aspect ratios.

You've also listed several aspect ratios with different sized images.  640x480 has 4 times as many pixels as 320x240, but they're the same 4:3 aspect ratio.  Your very first sentence is definitively incorrect.

Also, if you're working on a lot of files, it's generally much easier with command line tools. Just because you don't encounter its usage all the time, it doesn't mean that it's not useful in this case.  I understand that my suggestion may not be the best, but Imhotep did offer a nice GUI tool for ffmpeg, and that's worth looking at.  It's completely free as well.  The first response by Tom Cieslak also provides a free tool.  The point distribution is unfair to the others.

My objection is not about you directly Merete.  My complaint is that the self closer gives themselves most of the points.  It's about how EE does it, when you select best question.  I've never seen anyone close a question this way, if they were to distribute it themselves.  This distribution method makes it look like a point grab for the sake of getting points, with a little bit scattered to the rest in an attempt to appease everyone.  This is one question that can really only be determined by the asker, because it would be entirely preference.  If the asker did actually close the question, he or she may indeed choose your answer, but without that definitive selection, it is not proper to distribute the points this way in this case.  There are other questions I would agree with the distribution, but not this particular one, because of the factual error between size and ratio and the fact that other have provided suggestions.  Just because you've provided 3 suggestions instead of one each.
