Server 2008 R2 Foundation: How to upgrade

Hi,

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation, that I absolutely need to run as a VM inside Server 2016 Hyper-V.  This is for archivation of an obsolete application, only.

Virtualisation is not supported in Foundation.  I know it works in VMware, but I am not sure if it also works in Hyper-V.
I would appreciate answers to these questions:

- Will Foundation run as VM in Hyper-V even though it is not supported?
- Is there an in-place-upgrade-path to standard?
- Is there an in-place-upgrade-path to 2012 R2 standard?

Thanks.

imo, not supported = does not work.  However you should test this and satisfy yourself.  No in-place upgrades, only migration.

So in-place-upgrade is supported.  Great.
I do have the required licenses.  It's just that I'd rather not touch this fragile installation too much.  That's why I would prefer to virtualize it the way it is...
