Exchange 2007 Active Directory requiements

I am upgrading a customer from that is running Exchange 2007 in a Windows 2003 R2 domain on a single server.  I want to upgrade to Exchange 2013 on a 2012 r2 server in a 2012 active directory, the 20212 r2 DC will be on is own VM.  My question is, can Exchange 2007 live in a 2012 r2 domain since I want to upgrade the domain first.  I would prefer not migrating Exchange 2007 to 2010.

Hello,

You can perform upgrade of your domain from 2003 R2 to 2012 R2. However you need to run the following commands like after these two commands are successfully completed you can install 2012 R2 as an additional DC then move the FSMO roles by using NTDSUTIL commands.

The another step is you can join the 2012 R2 as a member server and then make it as Additional DC. Refer the below link

adprep /domainprep

Thanks

First you upgrade your Exchange and then you can plan to upgrade AD environment. Also remember, once you upgraded schema 2013 exchange, there is no role back and you cannot install 2010 also. If you need 2010 also, then upgrade your schema to 2010 and then to 2013.
