Windows Backup displays incorrect amount of data transferred

Hi

We have Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V Host running a few VMs. One of the VMs has a 4TB VHDX attached to it. We created a new backup schedule to a volume on external USB drive and included all the VMs in it. During the initial full backup wbadmin was displaying correct numbers (e.g. 3.2TB of 4TB transferred for that VM), but once it was done the size displayed appears not to account the big VHD. Both the total and per VM are wrong.

Nevertheless the status of backup is successful and the size of it is correct. The image inside the backup appears to be recoverable, however we have not tested it.

Have anyone faced it before? Would could be the cause of such behaviour and is it something to be concerned with?

Thank you!

The backup process transfers used space amount only. Though you have a 4TB vhdx container it does not mean that on this container the whole omount is used. Check how much soace is used and if the same amount has been transferred to backup file.

Actually we have 4 TB of data but subsequent full backups say only 260 gig transferred. So obviously not 4 TB.  And there's no way 260 gig is the differential either.  So that is why I was wondering about compression in the other related question you responded to.  I think the 260 gig is some number representing how much data was juggled around realigning the differentials and base image on the backup drive with each full backup and doesn't correspond to data at all in the ordinary sense of the word - data that was changed by the users.  I am not  getting much info on the point from MS so it's a hypothesis.  What are your thoughts?
