fans of one ProLiant randomly(?) speeding up to 100%!?
Hi, one of my ProLiant DL380 G8 servers has suddenly started to speed its fans from around 6% to 100% (see images) and then back down to 6% again ... up and down, all the time ... !?
Any ideas why that might be or how to correct this?
I've applied all the VMWare updates to the ProLiant but no change. I've already removed all the VMs from it, no change.
I've not applied the HP Firmware because a. I don't seem to be able/allowed to download certain files? and b. don't know how to manually apply them ... any suggestions as to updating the firmware?

I would look for the obvious first - bad air-flow sensor, or bad temperature sensor. It may be the fan itself is bad, and not sending proper RPM information but I think that's less likely given the symptoms. Last but not least is the possibility that something is getting hot, cooling down, getting hot, cooling down, etc - so it may make sense to try to track that down.

Paul: thanks for answering. but I've got some follow-up questions: How do I check for bad air-flow sensor or bad temperature sensor?
As for "Last but not least is the possibility that something is getting hot, cooling down, getting hot, cooling down, etc" > I've checked via iLo but didn't detect something ... or maybe I missed it ...

Definitely DL380 rather than DL360?
ASKER
andy: yes, DL380, not DL360

Andrew: do you have a download link to that SmartStart ISO? Seems HP has changed some things recently ... also it seems like one needs a subscription?
I'm also in contact now though with an external engineer to come and make the updates ...

That's correct you now need a subscription.
ASKER
Kind of stupid though that you need such a subscription even for older servers ... updates and bug fixes should be free! it's their fault, not mine ...
HPE have been giving free updates and supports for 20+ years, HPE business decision. you need current support and subscription, not a different model to many vendors.
e.g., VMware no support and subscription, no entitlement to updates.
Not happy change server vendor or get a subscription.

The oddest thing is fans 1,2 and 3 ever being as low as 6% with CPU2 fitted*.
Can you do a screenshot of the temperatures page and the CPUs page. If you can catch it then once with the fans on quiet and once with them on loud same as the fans page you posted.
*(If it's only got one CPU then we know what's wrong).

I've seen this on a MicroServer Gen8, which was a firmware issue with iLo.

it was found to be firmware.

Ok! If that's the problem indeed then it should be resolved tomorrow when the engineer comes to apply all the firmware updates etc ...
Keep you updated.
Keep you updated.

Ok, so I've updated the firmware and it seems like this indeed resolved the problem. Although the fans are still, at times, randomly blowing fast but only very rarely now, and only at 50% max ...
