Move mailbox to new database
Hello,
Following is our current config:
Windows 2008
Exchange 2007 STD
Exchange DB and current size:
1. EXEC DB (112 GB)
2. MAILBOX DB (1.1 TB)
3. MB3 (159 GB) (NEW)
4. PUBLIC FOLDER DB
5. MB4 (Not Created yet)
Since 2 DB is 1.1 TB and I don't think its a good idea to do offline defrag which might cause corruption plus it would take days to finish I thought about moving mailbox to new DB which is number 3.
I'm in process of moving around 400 mailbox to new database and all mailbox are under 16 GB except two mailbox which is 40 GB (user) and 270 GB (journal). I am planning to create another database which would be fifth DB, this would be last since we are running STD version of Exchange 2007 which is limited to 5.
I'm thinking about splitting 400 users between two new DB, once all mailbox are moved is it okay to keep remaining two mailbox 40 GB user mailbox and 270 GB journal mailbox in current database which is MAILBOX DB and then run offline defrag only on this DB?
Any help and guidance appreciated.
Thank you,

Yes offline defrag is recommended. but offline defrag will take too much time since this is large database so it is better to create new database move mailboxes and then delete mailbox database which was having 109 GB of white space.
Please feel free if you have any further query.

Correct and that's what I'm doing but my question is once all mailbox are moved is it okay to keep remaining two mailbox 40 GB user mailbox and 270 GB journal mailbox in current database which is MAILBOX DB and then run offline defrag only on this DB? Will it still take long time since there are only two mailbox left?
Yes it will take long time, why because what ever mailbox you will move to another database will remain on old database till you run offline defrag,
The moved mailboxes will remain in deleted state on old database and only free when you run offline defrag. so there is no meaning to keep only two mailboxes.

If you check database properties you will see option to keep deleted mailboxes for 30 days.
so suppose you have moved some mailbox to another database but it will remain in old database till 30 days, due to option to keep deleted mailbox for 30 days, after 30 days it will deleted purge from old database, but the space will only free when you run offline defrag.
