Auto assign Category when openeing an email (Outlook)

Hi,

Anyone know if it's possible to automatically assign a Category when opening an email in Outlook ?

Had a look round the Rules but that mostly appears to be around receiving and sending.

Thanks

Steve

Folder specific events would be ideal  so that looks promising, we want it to happen on email opening rather than on email read if you see what I mean. Basically we're using the Categories (each one assigned to a User, we're only a small company) to say who dealt with an email.

i'll take a look at the link above and come back later today

Thanks Bill :)
Hi Steve,

It sounds like Bill has his finger on a solution for you, but I'm curious... is this a shared mailbox, where everyone in the company can see incoming? And you want Outlook to assign categories based on which copy of Outlook (which PC) opens the message?
Hey Colleen,

Yes, it is a shared mailbox and yes I want to write an Add In that assigns the Category (each one is currently assigned to a person) of the person who opened it and possibly additionaly who moves it to a "Dealt With" folder

The Add In (VSTO) looks like the best route at the moment

Make any headway? Need any additional help?

VSTO Add In project is certainly the way forward for us. This will take me a few weeks elapsed to get the POC going (other work priorities etc...) and i'm sure i'll end up having more specific questions as I progress that i'll be posting for sure.

Thanks Bill, enough ideas for me to progress this.

Great, glad that was helpful.  If you get into it and have additional questions come back with new question(s).  Fee free to send me a site message if you want when you post the question so I don't miss it.
