restoring files from Windows Backup of a Server 2012R2 server to another server with Windows Server 2008R2
I had this question after viewing Question about Windows Server Backup, and restoring files made from another server.
I would like to back up my data files from our new server running Server 2012R2 Standard, to our old server which runs Server 2008R2 64bit. Both servers are file servers only. I would like to use the backup made to USB HDD rather than direct transfer across the LAN due to issues with having both servers on line simultaneously. When I plug in the HDD to the Server 2008 machine, booted from install disk and try to repair->image restore, the 2008 machine does not recognize the HDD or its image backup. Can you help with a proper procedure? 2012 backup makes the USB HDD invisible to files explorer, does not get assigned a drive letter (to "protect" the drive from being overwritten accidently??) Thank you!
