adding user to local adminstrator group: JoeDoe@MyDomain.local vs MyD\JoeDoe
Long ago when I installed the server, I called the domain name MyDomain.local and gave it a "pre Windows 2000" domain name of MyD. (I believe that is called the NetBIOS name?)
Since then, I have set up about a dozen clients and always used the MyD\JoeDoe syntax when adding users to local administrator group.
I understand that using NetBIOS name is a security weakness and that the clients can be configured to not allow this. I have configured my brand new laptop to disallow NetBIOS sign on. When I join the domain I will add user as joeDoe@edfunding.local. Is it really that simple, or should I expect some "gotchas" down the road? Especially since the server is still SBS2003. (I respectfully request no tirade's about the importance of upgrading.)
Also, assuming the new laptop goes well, what happens on older clients if I disable NetBIOS. For instance Cpu01 shows MyD\JaneRoe under local administrators. Do I have to add JaneRoe@MyDomain.local ? And will her old profile and sign on continue to work, or do I need to treat it as a new profile ?
