domain controllers numbers

what formulas are used to determine how many domain controllers you need in a domain? I presume it goes of number of computers/users in the domain but do MS have any specific formulas/recommendations to work with?

Hmm... here's a blog from a Microsoft PFE too: Capacity Planning for Active Directory Domain Services
Excellent point and reference to capacity planning AD... My point is that hardware specs these days (the blog references 2003 at one point), should allow any organization who clearly doesn't have in-house AD experts who already know this stuff to easily be handled by as few as one DC.  If you're big enough to actually worry about the number of DCs for load reasons, you're big enough to have several people handling AD alone for the organization who already have this knowledge.
