macOS Sierra encrypting with FileVault what is this? how to stop it?

I upgrading my Mac Book pro with latest macOS Sierra and after the update in the setting up OS it prompted me whether to enable the FileVault. i did not know what it is, so i click Ok.

now, i can see that the FileVault is encrypting, while my harddrive 750GB is empty, i do not have much files in the machine, it took more than 12 hours and still counting, it shows that another 9 hours remianing.

i do not know what is this, i do not have very confidential data in my computer, i do not want to use FileVault.
what exactly is this encrypting will do to my machine? will it use more space as a result of encrypting?  i cannot stop the encrypting in progress.  when i click to turn off the FileVault, it gives me a popped message that "Wait until your desk is fully encrypted"

i would appreciate if someone could help me understand this FIleVault. what it will do to my harddrive, is there a way to stop this progess of encrypting without formatting the drive? lets say i wait for another day to finish the encrypting, if i want to decrypt my harddrive, will it take the same amount of time for decrypting it back to original state that it was before encryption?  if i encyrped and  decrypted , is there something i should worry about? a side effect on my harddrive due to the encryption and decryption?

i am worried about this and i could not find any solution online, so plz help me.

OK .. so FileVault is a complete HD encryption system which encrypts your entire HD.  In effect it protect the entire system and requires a password to access any information on the mac.
Read more on it here

It sounds like you do not want or do not need that level of protection.

Don't panic .. just let the process complete as you cannot stop it now and it MUST complete .. then TURN OFF FileVault protection.  It will take a fairly long time to reverse the process so be prepared.  It will NOT do any harm or damage any files (there are no side-effects) but you must let the encryption and decryption complete fully.

thanks Eion.

just last question, if the entire HD is encrypted, then if i add more files in the hard drive, will the encryption start again for the new files added to hard drive?

thanks alot
Personally, I would not bother unencrypting once is encrypted. You probably have more personal information on the computer than you realize. Why make it accessible to someone who might steal your laptop?
