A non-mathematical answer (not true for real) would be in here:

I am somewhat of a tortoise in here. I pedal along at more or less the same rate for a very long time (7 days a week, 365 days a year for more than eight years at a somewhat increasing rate.

Nonetheless, I am never number 1 (always passed by hares of the day and always passed). However, I never get passed in the long haul. Slow, steady, and forever makes progress,
why is a string?

because when you push it, it doesn't!

Because quarks.
Achilles,  not Archemedes.
Thanks Dr. Klahn.
One must remember to use the proper math to describe a phenomenon.  If the math doesn't fit the phenomenon then all you get is wrong answers.
No need for math, just normal common sense. It happens in races all the time when the opponent has a head start. In this case, just run very slowly -- the tortoise will win.
Question quite stale.  Points split among the contributors who addressed the problem directly.
