Documents and settings folder

We have a legacy  Access 2003 database in use... some XP computers still access it without issue.  The issue is those with Windows 10.  There are some reports in the database that contain graphics that point to a common folder on a user's computer that share the graphic images instead of embedding them into the DB (to save DB size):  C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Database\Support\

While XP can access the graphic images without issue, Widows 10 errors that the DB doesn't support this file type. (JPG) and to try using .BMP for a .GIF format.

Question is why can't the DB in Windows 10 read the JPG yet if I open the folder I can open the JPG without issue, only MS Access is have an issue in Windows 10

Thank you.

As a test, if you convert one to BMP, will Access open it ?
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Database\Support\

Windows Vista, Seven, Eight and Ten do no know what you are talking about.

Document and Settings died.

Now it is c:\users\username\documents.

You need to create a common folder the dead systems can understand alongside modern systems.
I think there used to be a Microsoft Office Tools option in the start menu for older 2003 installs. You could select JPG there and click "Save my settings" to allow JPG to work.

But it might be easier downloading infranview & convert the JPG's rather then locating some settings which might or might not work any longer.

I don't think its a JPG conversion issue as I have other JPGs that I just discovered in the same DB in the same folder that can be read.  This JPG isn't that big 71KB so I'm at a loss why Access can't open/use it.
How in Access are you trying to open it ?

The graphic is a link to the file on the location computer in a report
you could change your settings to save in %allusersprofile%\Documents
you will have to create a Documents folder there

I don't follow can you explain further?
"The graphic is a link to the file on the location computer in a report"
Can you not just embed the image ?
Also ... I wonder if it's a Trusted Location issue ... seems remote, but try making that location a Trusted Location.
Change the document link in the report to a location that is not Documents and Settings.

I could but we still use XP computers so that path is correct... I'm finding out that I originally thought it was a path issue but other files in the same path are opening in XP and Windows 10...  not sure why I'm getting this one error with only one JPG file on Win 10
The path is dead so you should change it and provide a way for the dead machines to get to it. You need to get rid of XP.
Make a folder c:\database (or whatever) on all machines and make sure the folder allows read and modify permissions. Do this on every machine and then change the report to c:\database.  This will work for you.

The path isn't the issue.... other JPGs are opening fine in the DB, on any computer.   I have tested with a new path on a Win 10 computer ,same issue.  Its most certainly not a path.
Can you update Access?  You need a more modern infrastructure.  Newer JPG files open just fine on any modern machine.

There isn't a need to update Access... for our needs its working perfectly.  There would be zero advantage to upgrading.  The JPG is not an newer JPG we have been using it for years without issue.  In fact its just the opposite, Access in XP can read it, Win 10 can read it, its just Access with Win 10 that isn't opening this one JPG but it others.

Database MX, I can't image its a trusted issue, the JPG is located on the Win 10 computer itself.. .same issue no matter what folder is saved and linked to.
I'm not sure you answered these questions:

As a test, if you convert one to BMP, will Access open it ?

Can you not just embed the image ?

I converted it to a .gif successfully and the same issue, converted to a .bmp and that worked fine in its original location.
There would be zero advantage to upgrading.   I find that keeping reasonably current avoids these issues. This does not happen to me or to my clients.
"I converted it to a .gif successfully and the same issue, converted to a .bmp and that worked fine in its original location."
And ...it's just this one JPEG .... other JPEGs work ok ?  That are in the same location ?

What happens if you take the converted BMP and convert back to JPEG ?

Good thought but same issue...  currently the only work around is to embed the image... so strange that Win 10 is behaving as such.

John I'm with you about upgrading .... when there is an issue... but as you know upgrading will have a hole new set of issues to deal with.
Is there are reason why you can't just embed?
The only reason I would  have a link is if ... I planned on changing the image often.
I have no problem with keeping current. Fewer problems that way than otherwise.

I have been trying to keep the DB size as small as possible, so as a result I have not embedded any images.  I suppose if this is not resolvable this will be the only solution.  Still hopeful of a solution.
How big is the compacted & repaired DB ?

about 40MB shared via a slow VPN with multiple locations

Its small but we have many reports and forms that use the file as its a company logo.  I was trying to keep the DB slim.
