Microsoft Licensing Questions

Hi,

We have some Microsoft Licensing question and hope that you can give us an idea.

Our Office 365 E3 users are entitled to download and use Office Pro Plus.  However, a lot of our users are still using the legacy Microsoft Volume Licenses of Office on their desktops to access emails.

We want to somehow claim those MS Office Volume Licenses from our E3 users and use them in our Remote Desktop environment.   Do we need to go by each computer, uninstall the Volume Licensing of Office and install Office Pro Plus in order to do so?

We have a licensing server being used by our Windows 2012 RDS Collections.  I assume we need to somehow apply the Office license on my licensing server, right?

Your advice is appreciated.

Thanks,

Legally, yes, you need to uninstall and change over.

As.for your RDS environment, RDS licensing is strictly for RDS connections. It will not track specific programs used. So no, you do not install office licenses in your RDS licensing server. How you license and activate office is dependent in your VL agreement.
Typical legal disclaimers about following advice from the internet applied. For licensing, it is always best to work with a certified partner and not rely in forums to be legal. Yes I include my own good advice in that category.
The scenario you propose doesn't apply in a RDS environment, Microsoft stipulates that you must use Office VL Media in a RDS environment.

We want to somehow claim those MS Office Volume Licenses from our E3 users and use them in our Remote Desktop environment Those licenses are assigned to specific user accounts and you would be in licensing hell, having to go to office 365, remove a license from a user, assign it to another user and so forth.
David, I. the paragraph before the one you quoted, the OP said E3 users were using "legacy" office volume license installs. I read that as the OP wanting to uninstall Office VL and let users install office Propels via E3. The VL licenses could then be legitimately allocated to the RDS machine. And since the OP has office VL, that means they have access to media via VLSC. It wouldn't be licensing hell and would be in keeping with current practices.
There still is no mechanism to untie the licenses from O365 and then license  in RDS.  When you install O2K16 using the get my software it is not VL media... Since he already owns VL media he only needs the E1 version of Office 365 (saves $16/month x 12 months (due to  annual licensing) per user. You give up the 5 installs per user though
