asked on

move expression web site to a new server

Hello,

I have an FTP backup of an expression website that I need to restore to a different server.  Specifically, it is a godaddy's webhosting platform.  Does anyone know if I can do this with the files from the previous website?  Do i need to setup the godaddy server with anything prior to copying the files in?  Any guidance on this would be appreciated.

thank you,

so a windows server running IIS and just copy the files to it?  That seems too good to be true!  Is any configuration of the server needed so the website works properly?
What database did it use?
i am unsure, it is still running but I don't have access to the server any longer because it is with our previous web developer.  Is there a way to determine that without having login credentials to the CMS?
Open zip and check config file
pasted the contents below...seems to be mysql?

<?php  if ( ! defined('BASEPATH')) exit('No direct script access allowed');

$active_group = 'expressionengine';
$active_record = TRUE;

$db['expressionengine']['hostname'] = '********';
$db['expressionengine']['username'] = '********';
$db['expressionengine']['password'] = '********';
$db['expressionengine']['database'] = '********';
$db['expressionengine']['dbdriver'] = 'mysql';
$db['expressionengine']['pconnect'] = FALSE;
$db['expressionengine']['dbprefix'] = 'exp_';
$db['expressionengine']['swap_pre'] = 'exp_';
$db['expressionengine']['db_debug'] = TRUE;
$db['expressionengine']['cache_on'] = FALSE;
$db['expressionengine']['autoinit'] = FALSE;
$db['expressionengine']['char_set'] = 'utf8';
$db['expressionengine']['dbcollat'] = 'utf8_general_ci';
$db['expressionengine']['cachedir'] = '/home/lifeh/public_html/webster/expressionengine/cache/db_cache/';

/* End of file database.php */
/* Location: ./system/expressionengine/config/database.php */

So in other words the backup I was given is useless and I have to re-create the website?
do you have a backup of the database?
I think it is just the FTP contents which I assume does not include the database.
Time to get the lawyers involved and examine the contract between your company and the web developer. You should be the owner of the application and the database. You should also be the owner of the account that the current site is hosted on.
haha, website isn't worth the hundreds of thousands lawyers would charge.  Time to rebuild from scratch!  Thank you for the help though.  At least i know what I have to do now.
