Office 365 DirSync Non-routable domain even thought it is routable.

So we have a non-routable domain xyz.loc as well as a public one xyz.com. I've followed the doc and added the UPN suffix on all users. and ran IDFix.exe to insure there were no errors.

I've added the domain to o365, and verified it with the TXT record. I've added all but the mail DNS entries (as we aren't ready to cutover yet).

I run the DirSync wizard. It finds no issues, but on the Verify Ownership of Domains screen it shows 2 xyz.loc and xyz.com but BOTH are listed as non-routable.

It think the part I'm missing is that I haven't done anything on my domain servers, do I need to install something like Azure AD connect?

When you say DirSync wizard what do you mean.. what link did you use to download it?

DirSync is deprecated and replaced by Azure AD Connect, yes.  It is supported to be installed on a DC but I would install it on a separate server.

Also, do you have a need to have the xyz.local addresses in your user's smtp addresses ( I am presuming that is where they are?)

I got to it via the portal. Users > Active Users > More > Directory Sync link is Go To Directory Sync Readiness wizard. I don't have a need for the .loc as smtp.

I'm 99% sure now it is because I don't have AD Connect installed anywhere yet.
oh you enabled it without installing it?  yes it needs to be installed

what type of migration are you doing? cutover or hybrid?
However, adding your domains as accepted domains should have nothing to do with the sync that would follow.
Why is the your .loc domain even there?  remove it in my opinion.

cutover as I'd like to not retain the exchange on-premise, and I don't mind a bit of downtime.

Gotcha. I won't select the .loc it was just the portal wizard that was showing it. I was just trying to get some pre-work done good thing it didn't work since I'm supposed to do that after the batch :)

Thanks.
