Updating Email Addresses in exchange 2013
We currently have an email address policy in place that formats our emails as username@domain.net (ex.) johnd@domain.net. We want to change to first and last name (ex.) john.doe@domain.net. We will have to update business cards, etc. over time so we would like to keep the old format for a few months until we are sure everything is up to date. What is the best method for doing this? Do i add a new policy along side the existing policy or do i change the policy and add an alias that matches the old? What is best practice for this situation?

Just alter your email address policy to include the old SMTP address as an alternate and the new scheme as primary. Here's an article that describes it: https://www.slipstick.com/exchange/add-additional-smtp-addresses-mailbox/
