Server 2012 R2 added to a Windows 2000 domain

My client has an old domain controller running Windows 2000. There are a couple other servers that run Server 2008 R2, but the DC has stayed on the Windows 2000 machine. I just purchased a Dell 460 with Server 2012 R2 on it and I'd like to move the DC role to the new server. As I understand, there's no migration path, but I was wondering how i should proceed. I had a couple of thoughts on how to do this:
1. Have the new server join the existing domain then promote it to the DC and 'demote' the old DC?
2. Should I establish a whole new domain (can it be named the same thing as the old?) and then maybe take the client PCs off the domain and re-join the new domain perhaps with the old DC offline.

There are about 20 client PCs, so it wouldn't be a huge deal if I had to re-join them all to a new domain.

You ant make your new machine a DC in your current domain right now. 2012 R2 requires 2003 functional level, and that 2000 server blocks that. Disjoining and joining a new domain has its own drawbacks. All new user accounts. No file permissions carry over. Servers need to he moved too, not just clients.

Pick your poison.

I should have stated in my original post that this new server is going to replace all the other ones, so I don't really need the other servers to "come along". After I copy the data off of them, they're going to go away. And the file permissions are pretty simple too. They have one or two shares that everyone dumps everything in. These people were in the dark ages.
