Excel 2013: Default workbook

This may seem a very basic question but it is really annoying me.

I want to amend the default workbook that is created whenever Excel starts. Now this used to be created from a template called 'book.xlt' that was placed in the 'XLSTART' folder - however I can't find this file anywhere on my hard-disk (the folders yes).

I have the OS set to show hidden and protected files and I have looked in the personal and common folders e.g.
  • C:\Users\afmitchell\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15\XLSTART

I have searched the entire hard drive for *.xltx files and can find nothing.

Can someone point out my stupid mistake ?

All the template files are saved by default in a folder called "Custom Office Templates" within your Documents folder.
Did you check in folder option, if you have selected the option "Show hidden files, folders and drives".
Then search again in above path.

Shums: Yes I have this option ticked - see my original post
Neeraj: 1) I am not talking about a custom template that I created but about the basis for the workbook that is automatically created by Excel each time you start a session b) I have already looked there
Under Excel Options (File\Options) General Start up options, uncheck the Show the Start screen when this application starts.
Check this link, it may help you:
Open Excel 2013 With a Blank Template
Sorry Shums I think you are a little confused; I am not talking about showing or hiding Excel's automatic 'Backstage' display that forces me to select a template or open file -what I am asking is how to find the default template that Excel uses to create a blank workbook whenever you start a new session of Excel.

It appears the default template is not in its traditional location

To clarify; my copy of Excel is already set to hide the start screen.

In fact re-reading that link you sent that is exactly what MS say you can do to replicate the previous behaviour if needed.
Glad that was helpful.
You already did your research. Best of luck.
I have never really needed to change the default workbook template so hadn't noticed they had changed it from a template to just the equivalent of a VBA 'workbooks.add' command.

Thanks for your help
Exactly the MS documentation link I needed to explain my confusion.
