o365 Buy vs. Rent break-even: lifespan of office 2016?
I'm considering a buy vs. rent decision for office 365 because our Exchange Online Plan 1 mailboxes won't work with our Outlook 2007 after October 2017.
If we purhcased copies of Office 2016 and then microsoft changed file formats (like what happened .doc -> .docx, I'd be really sad).
How many years could I reasonably plan on keeping purchased copies of Office 2016?
(Obviously, with rental, we are always entitled to the then-latest version).
We tend to buy and run stuff into the ground here.
Thanks,
Mike

Rental Pro's:
1. Each year, pay for exactly the number of employees
2. All users get ALL apps (including MS Access)
3. Always entitled to get the current version of Office (2016, 2017, 2018, etc.)
4. No risk of software investment becoming obsolete and unusable
5. Each user can install on up to 5 devices (e.g. home pc/mac/ipad)
6. No need to buy extra licenses for work laptops , travel laptops
Rental Con’s:
1. Total 5 year cost is greater with rental model (break even 2.7 years)
2. Inflation risk (cost in year 5 would be more than in year 1)

Cons:
1. Yes, but you cannot ever upgrade to keep this equation intact. I keep up to date and that negates Con 1
2. No one can guarantee about inflation, but the price for me has remained constant for 4 years including my renew this February.

One more thought, a different angle maybe, if everything is rented and eventually moves to the cloud, will there be a need for you in the future?

Thank you !!!
I like to keep current. LOTS of problems in here with old versions of software that can be fixed with new versions. So for me the economics favour renting Microsoft Office.
