Comcast Static IP Addresses

Comcast has always been bass ackwards and it still doesn't make much difference as long as you know they are idiots but I am going to ask.

As far as static IP addresses go they call what I call a IP Address a gateway and what they call a IP Address  I call a gateway.

Even if you look at their Business Gateway what is caption as "WAN IP Address" they are calling a Gateway Address. Their own router calls it a IP address yet tech support calls it a gateway. Why is that?

Now the killer... with their Gateway in place I RDP to one ip address but when they put their Gateway in to "virtial bridge mode" and I put my router on I have to RDP to a different address. They look at it differently than any other ISP on the planet. How are they looking at it?

I think you misunderstand something.
Your public IP is not Your gateway.
If you have Comcast Business Router (like I do) then you have (I think) 5 IP addresses for you to use from outside and also You have a gateway, but you;re using it only to setup your First Router/Firewall behind Comcast Modem.
You're not using this IP for anything else.

This IP is a gate for your router/firewall to rout traffic through.

It should be no matter if your Comcast Modem/Router is working as Router or as Bridge. Only difference is that they're disabling NAT so actually your traffic is passing through Bridge and going to your firs NIC in your network, that's why you need to put your first available public IP to this NIC and called it WAN.

Let say you've got 5 IP's from Comcast

125.222.100.201
125.222.100.202
125.222.100.203
125.222.100.204
125.222.100.205
125.222.100.206  this will be your Gateway, but ONLY for your first Router/Firewall WAN NIC
For your network devices Your firewall/router LAN adapter IP is your Gateway.

You also will get Network Mask for Modem and is going to be
255.255.255.248 to allow only 6 IP be assigned (5 External + gateway)

Comcast technicians calling your Modem IP as Gateway, for no reason, or maybe they're not interested what IP pool you has, because they are identify their Modem by Gateway IP address.

No. I am not misunderstanding anything. The difference between a Public IP Address and a Gateway is TCP 101. They have said nothing about multiple IP addresses and to be honest all they need is one. I am still getting back to:

1) When their Business Gateway is in place I have to hit 23.25.30.202 to to RDP
2) When their Business Gateway is put in to bridge mode I have to set the IP on my router to 23.25.30.201

That is two distinctly different public IP addresses. Try it. Go in to your Comcast unit, under WAN Status and see what your "WANIP Address" is. The call them and ask them what that number represents. They will tell you Gateway...
For the record.... I kicked this up to tier 2 and the tech just returned my call.....

He said that for some reason all the customer support people at Comcast have always called a gateway address a IP address and a IP address a gateway address. He said they have it 100% backward. He has never understood it but that is just the way it is and has been.

He also said that putting their modem in to bridge mode does not release the static IP from their modem and hence I have to reverse the IP and Gateway in my router. All the other carriers, Frontier, Qwest, CenturyLink etc. release the static IP from their device when it goes in to bridge mode and actually required it to be put in the customer router.

Leave it to Comcast  not to do anything properly.....

I don't really understand. Whole idea of setting up BRIDGE is forwarding WAN(External IP) to LAN on Modem device
You might have one of the other public IP's in the Sonic Wall. When I went in to the Comcast Business Gateway and looked under WAN Status the "WAN IP" was 23.25.30.202 and the "Gateway IP" was grayed out. When I called Comcast they said out static IP was 201 and the gateway was 202. That is bass ackwards. Even the captions on the Business Gateway called them correct but Comcast support people didn't. So... as the Business Gateway says... the IP address is 23.25.30.202 so when the put the Comcast Gateway in bridge mode I put the 202 in my SonicWall as the WANIP.

Didn't work. Even though the Comcast Gateway changed to bridge mode it kept the 202. I had to put 201 in my SonicWall. Not sure what to tell you but Comcast has been like that for decades. It has always been that way. It was a relief to hear their tier 2 tech confirm it.
OK, so explain this

My IP's are
50.246.185.121
50.246.185.122
50.246.185.123
50.246.185.124
50.246.185.125
Gateway
50.246.185.126

And I have this IP's listed on my Sonic Wall.
I'm not using all so If I want to connect laptop to external network I need to set up
IP: 50.246.185.125
Mask 255.255.255.248
Gateway: 50.246.185.126

And 2 Comcast DNS servers

And I can connect to the internet.
I don't know why your External IP is changing but I believe that Gateway should always be 23.25.30.202, no meter if you have Sonic Wall connected or not., and in Sonic you should set WAN as 23.25.30.201, Mask 255.255.255.253 Gateway 23.25.30.202 and 2 DNS servers and you should be OK
I actually met the Comcast technician out there and he explained it quite differently than did the tier 2 tech. The "WAN IP Address" as seen in the Business GAteway is a static IP address assigned to the Business Gateway when you purchase a Static IP. It is more or less a second static IP you get for free. It is assigned to the Business Gateway and never changes. Hence the confusion.

The WAN IP Address on the Comcast Gateway is 23.25.30.202. Without the SonicWall in place that is what I use to get in to the building. The "second" static IP address is the one they actually call the Static IP Address. It is the 23.25.30.201. For four years it hasn't been used until I put in the SonicWall at which point I, for the first time, actually made use of what Comcast was calling the Static IP Address. You have yet to look at the WAN Setting and see the "WAN IP Address". This is the point of confusion.

Unfortunately the SonicWall chocked the internet. It took a 150Mbps download speed and choked it to 40Mbps. It is a TZ300. Wasn't supposed to do that.

Anyway.... the confusion is the "WAN IP Address" seen in the Business Gateway. This tech I met on-site was the only one who really knew what that was....
It looks like you have problem with SoniWall
Try upgrade firmware.
You should NOT run your network without firewall when your Comcast Router is switched to BRIDGE mode
I thought the same thing. A speed test with the SonicWall in place choked a 150Mbps down connection to 40Mbps. So I had the tech put the Business Gateway back in place and ran the speedtest again. 140Mbps down. I thought for sure the problem was the SonicWall.

So I brought it back to the office and put it on my Comcast (dynamic) and it was 140Mbps down, So I am at a loss.... Comcast's nomenclature now make sense but I can't for the life of me figure out why the SonicWall rubs 40Mbps down over there yet the Comcast Business Gateway gets 140Mbps.

It is a TZ300W. Very strange. It works like a champ on my Comcast but chokes theirs. I think I am going to have to put it in place and just let it go. Troubleshoot bit by bit. They had problems when they first upgraded the speed 6 months ago but no one remembers what the issue was. Thanks for all your help.
Check your MTU settings, sometimes that will come into play. Just feel free to post again if you still have issues.
