Gmail using imap and Outlook 2013

I'm having a lot of problems syncing mail to my iPhone and Outlook 2013 using imap via Gmail

My understanding of imap is that you can use it on multiple devices and all devices would have the same view of email, all email would be received on all devices, if you delete an email off of one device it would delete it off of all of the other, folders would stay in sync across all devices, etc..

I'm finding that not all devices receive all email.  I'll go into the office and there will be email there that is not on my phone and I will find not all messages on my phone are not on my Outlook.  There is one person that sends me email that I never see unless I do a search for that person and I will find that they sent me and email and it's not on either device.

Answering the obvious questions, yes imap is on all devices and setup as per GMmail instruction, I did check to make sure.
I also checked and the person I have to search for is not in the spam/junk folder

Is imap that buggy, please help me understand what is going on

thanks for the help

Hi There,

One possibility is you have rules setup on your inbox. have a look and see if anything may be affecting the user mentioned. Very likely if its just one person.

You are correct that you would see the same on all devices with IMAP, but don't forget IMAP does need to sync where Outlook is continuously syncing, so you may see emails in outlook that your device has not yet sync with.

Imap only downloads youe exact email folder structure as it is on the server, it doesn't do any other kind of processing. If mails are moving about, its your Outlook client.

The os is Windows 10 pro Outlook is 2013

I will remove the rules and see if it makes any difference, there are no rules on GMail.

It's not that email that is moving around it's that email doesn't arrive on the clients, i.e. iphone and Outlook.  It would seem that if all the clients are being affected it has to be the source the email is being downloaded from.
