What are basic troubleshooting things I should try when fixing a laptop?
I have been given a laptop to investigate the problems reported.
"It's acting goofy. At least now I can get it to power up and give me a display and actually get out on the internet. But it is either slow or locks up. I've done various things such as check disk, etc."

@nobus, what is a good way to backup everything? I'm familiar with Mac's Time Machine and love that software for my Mac, but I haven't ever found confidence in using backup software for PC (usually because I just find all the files that are important to me and throw them on an external drive).
