How to save captions from jpeg to pdf using Acobe Acrobat XI Standard/Pro

We have a Manager that for reports he is changing jpegs into pdfs but all of them are losing the captions. Is there a way using Adobe Acrobat XI Standard/Pro or a free/online method to do this transfer but not lose the captions?

Hi

When you say "losing the captions" could you be more specific? It would be good toss know where those captions are, how they have been created and if they are indeed part of the JPG (which I doubt).

Normally a conversion from JPEG to PDF is exactly that, anything that is in the JPG will now be in the PDF, and look the same (subject to JPG dimensions vs PDF settings for paper size), so if the captions are part of a JPG, they will be there too...

So if there are captions that get lost they may be in a document, overlaying the JPG or in HTML doing the same. Which unless this document is converted as a whole is expected.

Could you give us information on the type of source where your user takes the JPG from or provide us with a sample/example?

So I spoke to the Manager and what he means is that say he has three jpegs named Photo 1, Photo 2, Photo 3, when he makes it into "one" pdf, he wants the "File Name" to be on each page. So the first pdf page will Photo 1, and the next Photo 2, ect.

What ever the file is named will be the caption on each page in the pdf.

Here's an EE article that shows how to do it:

Create a PDF file with Contact Sheets (montage of thumbnails) for all JPG files in a folder and each of its subfolders using an automated, batch method
https://www.experts-exchange.com/articles/18414/

That article talks about recursing into subfolders, which it seems that you don't need, but, of course, the technique works otherwise — simply use the gm.exe command without the batch file. Regards, Joe

P.S. Sorry I missed your Live request — was away from my computer.
Ok thanks for the update.

I think whilst there may be some product out there that auto appends the filename of a jpg to the PDF page, it may make more sense to look at the tool he is using in the long run.

I would normally expect those PDFs to be generated via an intermediary application such as Word or Powerpoint, which have all the annotation features and provide far better formatting options over any direct to PDF conversion.

To insert JPGs into Word our PP would be the 'correct' way to go about that and would stop the next support call ("the captions are now in but they don't look the way I need them to")

Do you have any reason why the user wants to convert straight from JPG to PDF?

Notwithstanding Joe's excellent trick ;o)

The user says he really just needs the captions of the file names and he does not go into Word because he really does not need any other formatting. I think it is just how he wants it organized for filing purposes. He said he uses a program at home to do this.

I will look at the batch file/gm option and see. And GM automatically put the file name of each jpeg into each page of the pdf?

OK, but remember that the purpose of the batch file is to recurse into subfolders. You likely just need to look at the gm.exe command. Btw, this EE article shows where to get GM, how to install it, and explains some of the options, such as the Quantum Depth:
https://www.experts-exchange.com/articles/18119/

That article is not for JPG-to-PDF conversion — I refer to it only for GM installation purposes — it's the other article (https://www.experts-exchange.com/articles/18414/) that is about JPG-to-PDF conversion, including having the filename as a caption on each converted JPG in the PDF file. Regards, Joe

Okay, I am looking at downloading at downloading and installing GM.

Okay, let me look at the second paragraph information.

I know this puts the file name under the jpegs but does it put the filename into each corresponding page on the single pdf? Maybe another program that does this function instead?
