Maintaining a PST file separate from Outlook/Exchange

User generated imageHi,

  I have a user whose exchange mailbox is greater than 50GB. I like to create a separate PST file in local hard drive (C:) where he could move certain email folders in and out of on demand.

 (* I am not talking about having Outlook automatically archive emails that are older than certain dates.)

  To accomplish this, in Outlook I opened Account Settings, selected Data Files tab, clicked Add button.
Then I see a popup windows (see screenshot) with two options: (1) Office Outlook Personal Folders File (.pst)  (2) Outlook Data file (.pst).
 What is the difference? Which one should I choose?

 Another thing that I like to know is if I am taking right approach?

 Fyi, no other user/mailbox on the network needs to access this PST file.

Thanks.

What version of office is this? I am going to assume the Outlook.pst is the legacy version of the PST file and the other is the current. You can select the top one unless another expert has a better suggestion.
By the way make sure you keep the PST files relatively small. There used to be a 2 gig limit but it has increased with the newer versions of office. Hopefully you have a way of backing up the PST's from time to time.

@Adam
I have outlook 2016 thru office365. I created PST using both options and imported 5gig pst into one of two. I copied and moved some folders from my exchange account to these PST and I really can not tell the difference so far.
I intend to call MS support for explanation.
