API v SOA

The concept of API's seems to be making press recently; the idea of business applications providing API's for others to consume.

But isn't this the fundamental of SOA that has been around since the early 2000's?

I'm failing to see the difference between a service and API?

Thanks, in relation to the difference between a service and an API - they are the same as Dennis says?

Or an API is a type of service etc?
A service is a type of api
Dennis
You will get conflicting answers on that question :-)

What other types of API are there?
Initially, an API was a way for programmers to access low level programing from high level languages. Today the term is mainly used to refer to an interface used to expose code written and maintained by other programmers without releasing the source code.
