Sybase and replication server

hi,

as I know replication server is belongs to the Sybase server and any technology different between Sybase replication server( need a separate license I know) and MS SQL build replication.

why someone still use Sybase ASE replication server if MS SQL already has it and why don't simply migrate to MS SQL?

and it seems I never heard about Oracle replication server, how oracle handle replication ? all relies on data guard ?

In Oracle Data Guard really isn't replication.  Oracle used to have two replication products:  Advanced Replication and Streams Replication.  They have deprecated both of those in 12c and are rolling everything into GoldenGate.

You have to look at total cost of ownership.  If your entire staff has been using Sybase for 20 years, moving to a new product might not be cost effective.  You also need to look at Operating Systems for the same reason.  Only recently has SQL Server moved into the Linux world.

yes.

" Only recently has SQL Server moved into the Linux world."

yes! so big change is coming .

"Advanced Replication and Streams Replication"

so this is 2 x separate product which need license. what is the pros and cons of each of these?

"The CON is that Oracle has deprecated it.  It is still in 12c and supported but there are no new changes and it will be desupported in a future release."

sorry I mean what is the technical diff between 2 types of replication.

Way too many to cover in a Q&A site.  I would jump into the online documentation for the two products.

"SQL Server is an old version of Sybase that Microsoft purchased and made to run on Windows.  "

but it seems from SQL 7.0 all sybase code removed and start using their own code, right?

"It took them 10 years after purchasing it to catch up and fix all the bugs that were already fixed in Sybase"

it is already fixed why MS still need to fix it?

"Why wouldn't you want Sybase?  Same product, just 10 years newer."

structure the same I can see! can manage in the same way. a company I am going to join will use Sybase.
but one thing, I searched that Sybase replication server can do real time replication and then send to Sybase IQ for some kind of fault detecting, it seems that I don't heard that from MS SQL replication at all.

anyone see MS SQL server has real time replication at all ?

or MS SQL server do mirroring as the real time replication option?

Sybase do not have mirroring technology at all ?

I watching this one:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6p60NF3YQ0

it seems that we need to configure the Sybase replication in command mode? no UI mode ?
hi,

I think the last part of this post is, how can I monitor the replication server status ? video link don't coach  that part.
hi,

any way to check why a replication server down ?
I don't know anything about Sybase.  Hopefully another Expert can assist you later.
tks anyway.
tks all.
