Lightweight Networking
I'm downsizing my office and operations. Currently I'm using MS windows server and active directory. I would like to abandon having MS networking services and management for something that won't be so expensive to upgrade and maintain. What are my options if I still want a measure of security regarding the access of network resources etc?

Yes Samba will do that for you

So how would I go about doing this. Would I need a separate server to manage samba like a domain controller in AD?

OK see the install looks reasonably straightforward. Not sure I'm clear about one thing though.
I have 3 PCs, does samba allow me to manage user logins on all those machines like AD? So if the password for a user needed to be changed that could be done in one single place on the samba server say?

Will Samba give me a network environment where I can manage users' access to various resources?
