6th Generation i7 vs 7th generation i5

I was looking to buy a new computer, and the top 2 that I came narrowed it down to two laptops/ 2-in-1. The one has a 6th generation Intel core i7 processor, while the other has a 7th generation Intel core i5. I wasn't sure which is the better overall processor.

1. Do you have the processor model numbers?  There are a LOT of each type.
2. Define "better"? Are you just after raw speed, or does battery life and cool running matter?

i have here an i-5 2310, and an i-3 4170 system both with 8 Gb ram
the benchmark shows nearly identical figures, and i see not much difference in their speed

so the only way imo to get a serious idea about both, is testing each one with your softwares you intend to run
usually, for most people, that cost and effort is a bit too much

in that case - look at the cpu benchmarks, and if they're nearly the same, don't worry too much
I would go with the 6th generation i7 the two major deference is i7 has 8mb cache and higher cpu clock speed i5 has 6 mb cache and its highest clock speed is 3.8ghz, howerver the i7 uses more power than the i5. The i5 has turbo boost which I think will compensate.

your choice both uses the same speed memory

The Processor for the 6th generation i7 is 6500U, while the 7th generation i5 is 7200U DC Processor. My main use of the computer would be to type documents, browse the internet, and stream video's. The i7 computer would come with 12GB of RAM, while the i5 comes with 8GB of RAM. So ultimately, what would be the better overall processor, with speed, cache, and cooling, etc.
