DNS Record - External Public IP (Sonicwall VPN)
Hello,
I have setup a VPN through our Sonicwall, however looking to setup a DNS Record so that instead of users typing Public IP for the server name I'd like for them to type a name instead. How can I accomplish this within my DNS Server?
Thank you so much!

In all honesty, that's a pretty stupid idea... the reason people stick with IP is you can't exactly guess it.... I assume you have a static IP so just leave it as it is
Like Chris said, best way to do it is build A record with VPN name inside your dommain.com record on External DNS.
If you don't have a lot of users and you don't use public DNS you can ask them to put some record in their local HOST file
Like this
123.12.11.125 vpn.yourdomain.com
This also going to work for all of them who will make that change

I agree with footech.
after having gone through 3 public ip address changes for various reasons, having name based services is much easier, and also easily lets you use back up public ip ranges with simple DNS changes...

adding a record in each users host files is the way I would go.

All great information...we do use Network Solutions for our external DNS. SO I can just create an A record within management console or create a record on each users host file? I have over 100 that will need VPN access, so how could I change on all host file rather doing one by one? Wouldn't just creating A record within external DNS be easier? Why would creating a host record be the way to go?
Let's say we are just needing internally, then I could just create an A record on my internal DNS?
Thank you all so much!

With 100 PCs, it would be better to create a record on the DNS server. Sorry if my answer misled you.
I'd just do the "A" record..
