Windows Live Mail is downloading duplicate messages...how do I correct this problem?
Windows Live Mail is downloading duplicate messages. There is a ton of stuff on the
internet re this problem and I am not about to try the myriad of suggestions. In your
experience what is the best way to solve this problem?

Go to Live Mail web mail and mark the messages READ. That should prevent re-downloading.

The options in Windows Live Mail have changed and I do not see that setting. I logged in to this email sympatico address (web based) and did not see the option in settings to mark the messages READ. Should I delete the account and start from the very beginning. Also, do you think this might be a virus causing duplication of email messages on a constant basis. This started a while back.

It could be a virus or change in flag to download again. If you have your old mail in a back up, deleting the account and starting again might work.
Any follow up on my suggestion?

One other point...the masterminds who are running this website have changed this website radically from what it was 2-3 years ago. It is no longer a valuable website for me to frequent. Too many hassles and it is not user friendly like it used to be. I will be cancelling my membership in the next couple of days. Thank you John for your great answers over the past many years.
