When syspreping a clone machine
On a windows 2008 r2 server I see the regkey for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWAR E\Microsof t\Windows\ CurrentVer sion\Setup \State
showing
IMAGE_STATE_GENERALIZE_RES EAL_TO_OOB E
Does it mean sysprep is complete ? or does it mean progress and add the networking to talk to domain controller
showing
IMAGE_STATE_GENERALIZE_RES

Hi netcmh,
The setupact log file under the panther folder indicates the sysprep started and generalise finished successfully. The Clonetag also shows the timestamp i ran the sysprep.
This is a clone of a production server and in the sysprep window on the clone I ran the generalise option with reboot. The reboot kept going in a cycle and I used the steps in this link to complete the OOBE https://www.wintips.org/how-to-fix-windows-could-not-finish-configuring-the-system-error-after-running-sysprep/
On some articles I read to determine whether or not Sysprep has run is to check the following registry location on the client machine:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWAR E\Microsof t\Windows\ CurrentVer sion\Setup \State.
In this location there will be an ImageState string value. If this value shows as IMAGE_STATE_COMPLETE, Sysprep has run successfully. If any other value is shown, sysprep has not run or has not run successfully. The key on mine says IMAGE_STATE_GENERALIZE_RES EAL_TO_OOB E so wasnt sure if this actually completed successfully.

The clone is of another VM, i have a snapshot i can revert to. I have checked the setupactlog, all the logs indicate several entries all indicate that it ran without error.
sysprep_generalize_IE without error
sysprep_generalize_BCD without error....etc and so on all saying without error
In the setuperr log file the only error mentioned is
[0x0f0043] sysprep winmain: the sysprep dialo box returned False
shsetup Cleanupadministratorpasswo rd: netusersetinfo(1003)failed
The ProductId key is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWAR E\Microsof t\Windows NT\CurrentVersion shows same entry when compared to the server I cloned from. I am guessing this mean SID has not changed ?

The fix for [0x0f0043] is to make sure that the machine is not a member of the domain, if it is - disjoin and run sysprep.

Thanks netcmh i have an idea of what to do now
You're welcome. Thanks for the grade. Good luck.
Look at the log files at:
(Generalize) %WINDIR%\System32\Sysprep\
(Specialize) %WINDIR%\Panther\
Unattended Windows setup actions at %WINDIR%\Panther\Unattendg
To verify if a computer system has previously been sysprepped, look under the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\
If you find a value named CloneTag under this key, the system has been sysprepped (i.e. generalized) and the value of this key will tell you when this was done.
