i have a vcenter 6.5 installed. (still running on evaluation license)

i connected 8 servers ( all licensed with esx standard 6)

i want to try to migrate a vm to another host. but when i want to do this i can only select the host where the vm is running.

You can't V-Motion between hosts on the free version.

then why a trial key??

i have still a key of the essentials but that only hosts 3 hosts.

can i add 2 or 3 essential keys on the vcenter to host all my servers?

If you have Essentials, you have a license key for 3 hosts and a license for vCenter Server.

all you need to do is install vCenter Server.

I would recommend the appliance, and I have an EE Article of how to install it easily, step by step tutorial with screenshots,

HOW TO: Deploy and Install the VMware vCenter Server Appliance 6.5 (VCSA 6.5)

I did that but then all my host's disconnect.

do i need to add them then again? i tried to connect them but that does not work

After installing vCenter Server, it needs to be setup, and all your hosts added to it.

Andrew,

i added the vsphere essential 6 license to my vsphere. i added 3 hosts.

when i add the 4th host i got:

This edition of vCenter only supports 3 host(s) in the inventory. Remove some hosts from the inventory before performing the operation.

so the key is limited to 3 hosts even if my hosts have own licenses.

can i add 2 vsphere vcenter essentials licenses to the same vcenter?

Andrew,

do i misunderstand you? i know that you wrote that i have a key for the vcenter and keys for the host's. but i only installed the key for vcenter in the vcenter.

then added the host's and assigned standard licenses on the hosts.

but also then i got the same restriction.

you can only add 3 hosts to vCenter Server essentials.

and you can only add hosts which have Essentials licenses, e.g. no standard.

no need to use standard licenses on hosts, if you have standard licenses, then you need to have vCenter Server Standard, not essentials.

You've got a muddle of licenses..

VMware, a software company founded in 1998, was one of the first commercially successful companies to offer x86 virtualization. The storage company EMC purchased VMware in 1994. Dell Technologies acquired EMC in 2016. VMware’s parent company is now Dell Technologies. VMware has many software products that run on desktops, Microsoft Windows, Linux, and macOS, which allows the virtualizing of the x86 architecture. Its enterprise software hypervisor for servers, VMware vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi), is a bare-metal hypervisor that runs directly on the server hardware and does not require an additional underlying operating system.
