Office365 Outgoing bulk mail limitation

Greetings,

I have a system in my office that processes credit card transactions at the end of the day and sends a message to every customer.  It uses an address such as donotreply@domainname.com which is on our office 365 server.  It has been working as originally configured for about a year.

Recently it stopped sending these end of the day messages.  I checked the configuration but it was still correct.  Also, the system has two components that use the same configuration, one allows a user to send one document at a time to a customer and the other, which I described above.  You only configure the outgoing mail server settings in one location in the system and it was working with one component but not the other.  This has been an issue for about two weeks, so every day there are more credit card transactions that it tries to send out.

Today, I changed it to a gmail address for testing.  We ran the end of day process and the mail started going out normally.  Then it stopped with the error "Error: Mailbox unavailable. The server response was: 5.4.5 Daily user sending quota exceeded".  I looked up the daily message limit and found it to be 100-150 messages.  This looks about right based on the outgoing log of the system.

I didn't have any error messages to go by with the office365 address, but I see that one relevant limitation that may be effecting this is this one : Message rate limit (SMTP client submission only) - 30 messages per minute.

I'm not a master at office 365 and I haven't been able to get any traction with the first level of their tech support.  They just tell me that my config is good.  So I guess my question is, can anyone with more knowledge of this give me an idea that I may be on the right track here that this limit may be causing my issue and is there any way to confirm it?

Thanks and best regards

Thank you for this consise and very helpful answer.

May I ask, is the reason that the mail relay method using a mail connector in office 365 is not recommended is because you could get your ip address listed on blacklists if it is used improperly?

Thanks again.
Thanks very much.
What's not recommended is to use it for bulk mail sending, which might result in blocking the IP :)
Thank you.  I understand.  Do you think using the relay method would allow for more than 30 messages per minute?  I haven't been able to find that limit for that method.
Microsoft doesnt disclose any information on what "reasonable limits" mean for this particular scenario, so I dont really know either.
