4K on a notebook?

Hi,

I am looking at two different notebooks one has a 13.3 inch and 1920 x 1080,
the other is 'Ultra High Definition' 3840 x 2160

Here are the two models:

http://www.harveynorman.com.au/computers-tablets/computers/2-in-1/hp-spectre-x360-13-w014tu-13-3-2-in-1-laptop-silver.html

Anyway, I am was told that the on chip video uses main memory.

Does anybody know how much I can expect to loose in these type of machines?

Is there any downside of 4K on a notebook. I am guessing some more battery life.

As far as my use goes. I don't plan on doing any gaming. Manly for virtualization, programming and office type things.

Thanks,

Ward.

Downsides?!?! The Battery will be crippled, memory usage will be huge, I run 4k on my machine at home and that's got a 6GB GPU. still uses a lot.

I have a very simple question, why do you want 4k on a 13" laptop? That's like putting a 500HP engine in a Morris minor... Pointless....

ASKER

Alex,

Thanks for your answer. I was thinking that more pixels might be sharper image - unless I am misinformed.

Do you know how much memory btw?

Thanks,

Ward.

It is the Lenovo Yoga with with high resolution.

Make sure you can read the screen.

I have a Lenovo X1 Carbon 14 inch screen with 1920x1080 resolution (the same as the HP above).

The appearance of my X1 is super. Very clear screen and very crisp. Resolution is a bit too high and even though I enlarge text sizes, an number of applications (including Office) use default native text sizes (very tiny) instead of the size I use for icon and menu settings.

My screen is also non-touch. Lenovo did this to provide better battery life (the point well made above). I get 4 to 5 hours without plugging into an AC outlet.

I think you might not be able to actually read text on this size of screen with 3840 x 2160 resolution. Take great care in your selection.
Agree with the comments r.e. this is really a higher resolution than you would want to use on the laptop's screen.

Unless you want the 4k capable GPU to drive a large external display, I'd suggest you stay with a standard HD (1920 x 1080) display -- that is PLENTY of resolution for laptop display.   As John noted, it'll be a very clear/crisp display at that resolution on a small screen.
