Dell R710 raid config

Anybody have documentation or information on how to navigate the RAID configuration software in the Dell R710? I looked at the Dell site and could not find it. It sees 6 drives but when I try to configure it only sees 5 and 1 as a foreign device.

Thomas N,

Is that foreign HDD a Dell certified drive?
Try this, it was taken from the dell forum

That configuration is possible. Reconfiguring the RAID arrays will require that you reinstall the operating system once you are done.

There are a couple of ways to get the RAID arrays configured. The first option how Dev Mgr mentioned, backup then create the new arrays by entering the RAID controller BIOS by pressing CTL+R during POST when you see the prompt. The follow the instructions found at the link below to configure your 2 RAID 5 arrays and initialize them. After they are created you can install the operating system as you did before and restore your data.

The second option is to use the Unified Server Configurator to create your first RAID 5 and install the OS. The USC is accessed by pressing F10 at the Dell splash screen. Once the utility loads you can start the process by selecting Deploy OS. After you have the OS installed you will need to create the secondary array either through the controller BIOS or by using Open Manage Server Administrator. Instructions for using the USC can be found here

Foreign derive can mean that this drive is different from other 5 you have.
Double check capacity and speed of this drive and compare it to other
You have to CLEAR the foreign configuration first. VD MGMT screen, highlight the controller, F2, Foreign, Clear. Once it shows as Ready, you can then configure it in RAID.
No, "foreign" doesn't mean it is different. It means it has a configuration on it that is not what the controller expects. Very common if coming from another system.

Im using a Dell R710 , I pulled the drive from another R710. Exact same drive. The only difference is the one I pulled it from was RAID 5 and im putting it in a system that is RAID 0.
You should have option to clean drive and add it to Raid.
If you don't see this option in Raid BIOS you can try install Dell Open Manage management Node and do it from Windows interface

I hope you don't really intend to set this up as RAID 0, RAID 10 maybe?
