Turning excel sheet to rack view for data center
I think this is possible with Excel, but don't know how to.
I have a sheet listing all server information and rack position. Then I have to position them in rack cabinet in another spreadsheet. How can I do this? Also, is it possible to generate network and server connection diagram with Excel, maybe using Visio or any free tool?
For example, I have this in excel
Then, I'm trying to generate another excel sheet based on the data for rack view.
Notice the position# in rack could be used as linking point to draw the rack view.

Hi,
Its interesting to see what you are trying to do. I have faced this issue a few times and am working on an excel tool which wiill
1. allow you to add devices to a rack
2. draw the rack layout
3. connect port devices together
4. table up all your design date
5. draw the device port layouts
All excel based and nearly ready for beta testing - and not too far off from needing beta testers.
It seems this is a common challenge and most people tend to have their own methods of excel use to document these things.

Where you able to code base on the rack and ru information?

This is how I want it to be.
Excel sheet 'Detail' has server name, type, Rack position#
Excel sheet 'RackView' has the view of Rack which shows servers and switches read from 'Detail'. I like this RackView to gather information from Detail, then draw the rack view.
