Need to get a Word Count from a Word file
I would import the file into Excel, and it could have three columns:
Word,WordCount,File
Thanks.
Word,WordCount,File
Thanks.
There is an option to show the number of words in a document that is open in Microsoft Word.
There is a status bar at the bottom of the display, Exactly what is shown in the status bar can be customised the context menu (right-click on the status bar).

Joe, I wold be happy to run your program and solve my problem. Have an Excel spreadsheet of all word used in all docs is great!
Is there a way for me to privately send you my email on EE?
Thanks.

Hi Graham,
Can it show a count of each word? That is, not the total number of words, but the number of occurrences of each and every word? Thanks, Joe

Thanks, Graham — what a relief! :) I didn't want to think that all my effort was for naught because Word has a built-in feature that does it.

Word does that (at least Word 2010).
File -> Information - right pane near top. "Words"
If you open "Properties" -> "Advanced (?) properties" you get a dialog, and on the tab "Statistics" you get counts for pages, words, lines, paragraphs, characters and letters (icl. spaces).

i know this works for Word 2010 (PC). MS says that it works in Word 2011 also :
Count words and lines in a document - Applies To: Word for Mac 2011

Microsoft Word counts the number of words in a document while you type. Word can also count pages, paragraphs, lines, and characters, either including or excluding the spaces. In addition, Word can count words in footnotes and endnotes.https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Count-words-and-lines-in-a-document-357c0269-6589-42e8-9924-e8c89840053d
Frank,
To be clear, are you saying that it reports the count of each word individually? In other words, something like this:

ABANDONS 1
ABASEMENT 1
ABASHED 13
ABATE 2
ABBE 18
That's a few lines from the word counts for War and Peace, which, btw, has 18,760 unique words in it. Regards, Joe

Also, I need this in a a format I can upload to Excel...and like Joe said, I need the actual words. They are the most important to me, more so than the count of each word.
Hi Paul,
I didn't see your post until after I hit Submit, but same question to you as for Frank (#a42024972). Regards, Joe

Joe, I need that script of yours. I sent you my email via personal message.
@Joe: Nope. It would give you what a writer needs if his boss sais "give me 1000 words on (...)".
You write the text, and it gives you the word count, paragraph count, page count and so on.
What you think of could be done with some meditation and a good helping of VBA code ;-)

Hi Joe,
of course! now i remember the discussion of the question of the number of times each word appears in a document (and not the total number of words in the document, which my answer addresses)
it seems to me that when George was writing his book some time ago, he asked exactly the same thing

I enhanced it to add column C, which contains the fully qualified file name, allowing you to merge the results of separate runs and still be able to tell which WORD (column A) and COUNTS (column B) came from which file, even after the combined rows have been rearranged by sorting in Excel.
As documented at that thread, I built an installer (a Setup.exe file) for the program. It creates a Program Group with a shortcut to the program, and also creates an uninstaller so that you can do a proper uninstall via Programs and Features. It runs on 32-bit and 64-bit XP, Vista, W7, W8/8.1, and W10. It requires an Office install (either 32-bit or 64-bit is fine). I've tested it successfully with Word 2007, 2010, 2013, and 2016 in W7, W8.1, and W10 (but not all combinations thereof).
As I mentioned at that thread, I'm not ready to expose the program to the entire Internet, but I'll be happy to give you a download link for it via the EE Message System if the solution interests you. Regards, Joe
