Laptop volume and over heating
We have a Lenovo T-series and the volume is somewhat low even on a Youtube video. What would be a solution, such as to download the video and play it back on VLC for example. With our previous desktops, VLC volume was always superior to WMP.
When the laptop is being used and powered by the adapter, today after an unknown period of time. Maybe an hour, I did not notice the time, the underside of the unit was rather hot especially on the left side. Even now after unplugging the adapter the right side underneath is cooling down but not the left. Having never used a laptop before "except" an old Presario to play DVD's, what guidelines on laptop use to prevent overheating?
a. unplug the adapter if the battery is 100% charged?
b. limit the amount of time the unit is used? Desktop runs all day....

Tom: Windows 7 maybe 6 years old?
Ramin: My settings are not like yours. All I have in general, level, advanced. In advanced there is a test button and the sound is louder than when watching a video.
As far as Youtube, I meant that when playing a YT video the volume is not high. Speakers are maxed out.
However when playing any video with VLC the volume level was always alot higher than when using WMP and that was on a laptop.
So on the desktop when I wanted loud volume on a music video, I'd always play it on VLC. VLC always as of today have a higher volume than WMP on the same video or music file.

6Y old,, so if you've never clean your heat sink probably you need to do it !!!!
@nickg5 - did you try any different Internet Browsers ?
Try this :
play your video on youtube > click on speaker icon on the right corner of your desktop > select mixer > drag the volume limiter of your browser to the top.
to increase Windows Media volume try enhancements:
right click on Windows Media screen > select enhancements > graphic equalizer > move the controllers to up.

laptops have internal mixers : there is a per application volume setting and additionally each app uses different channels. try and max up apparently unrelated volume controls and find the culprit. you should access those settings by right clicking on the regular sound icon and/or selecting advanced settings.

sorry about my comment regarding wmp... i misread it for wmv

when the laptop heats up, have a look at the cpu usage. if it is very high, chances are some app is running wild using up cpu cycles and you need some software cleanup, if you're below 10%cpu usage or whatever seems reasonable, you'll need to do some dust cleanup and possibly slow down your cpu. some programs such as speedfan can proove helpful.

@nickg5 - Did you open your browser first and run a youtube video before clicking on Mixer ?
that photo you posted above shows you were on Expert exchange page, I mentioned youtube page and while a video is playing .
please do that and post your photo again.
because your mixer must shows like this: ( I opened Internet explorer and chrome both playing youtube Video ).

Sound Driver.........I will look into how to do that another day. Also laptop on table vs. couch.

I'm using it with AC but no battery. I'll need to be online for a good bit longer to notice the heat.
I looked at CPU usage and the SSEdge should use more than any. The first image shows low usage. A couple minutes later it goes to 50%-70% and quickly back to 36%. Right now all I have open is the Edge and one browser for EE.

this lacks many channels
maybe this will help : https://www.cnet.com/how-to/get-the-old-windows-volume-mixer-back-in-windows-10/
once you get there, "wave" is probably the control you're looking for.
a live cd will also let you change that setting which should survive after rebooting into windows but there should be something simpler.

why is under 10% a problem?
not what i meant :
if you're not running high, chances are the fans do not work properly so clean the dust
if you're running high, chances are dust cleaning won't help much and you need to focus on whatever consumes cpu power uselessly.
10% is pretty much an arbitrary number. i'd say you should be around 0% cpu used when doing nothing ( maybe 1% from time to time ) and probably around 2-4% when reading a regular nonHD divx on vlc, assuming the hardware i'd expect to find on a not to expensive but not cheapest 5-6 years old laptop. that can vary by orders on magnitude depending on the actual hardware. rule of thumb : viewing a video should consume MUCH more power than doing nothing and doing nothing should consume next to zero.
either way removing performance enhancements, boost modes, ... and using conservative battery vs performance settings is probably something you should do on old hardware for home usage

It's a Lenovo T61 series,
I have Windows 7 as far as that last link.
I'll close this with one last question........
Always use the laptop with battery out or is that not good to do?

if you remove the battery,
when you are in the middle of Windows update process and Windows ask you "Do not Shut Down or Restart"
then suddenly a power outage occur.

you can make sure the AC for the laptop has an UPS - then you have no problems with short cut outs

Removing battery while in use and table top location has helped.
Always use the laptop with battery out or is that not good to do?
that will improve battery life and produce less heat but with the above mentioned restrictions. i also have a lenovo. personally, i keep the vents clean, hardly ever consume lots of CPU, and bought an extra battery. after a few years, the first battery lasts for 1 to 1:30 hours depending on what i'm doing, and the second about 4 hours. in summer, i sometimes hit 80-85° and a safeguard kicks in that slows down the CPU. in winter, i'm never above 60-70°. the second battery is only plugged when i need to work for a long time without AC... there is no definite answer to that question.
btw, mine is never significantly noisy even when heating enough to reach maximum fan speed. noise is an indication that you do have too much dust.
>> Removing battery while in use and table top location has helped. << glad to hear that - but i got no credit for it

Sorry, I do not know 100% what it was or is. The battery was bought new off Ebay for under $20 so it may not be 100% healthy. Also, I am overseas and using 220 volts for the adapter, so there are several variables.
99% with laptop overheating is dirt in heat sink.
Try using compresses air from can or compressor to clean computer went an check if this resolved your issue
