cannot remove vmnic
I am getting error when I try to remove it from GUI in vCenter:
Network configuration change disconnected the host 'server.com' from vCenter server and has been rolled back.

it is vmnic0 on 1g. we're adding a 10g vmnic1. vmnic0 has the vmkerner0 and vmotion/mgmt on it and most of the vm port groups. we trying to move off the 1g but then when removing that 1g vmnic0 it gets that error.
have you added the vmnic1 to the same vSwitch ?
and then later move vmnic0 to standby/unused?
and complete this by connecting direct to the ESXi host or do it on the console.

Thx andrew. I will do the direct console. but usually what is the best way to move a vm port group over from a 1G to 10G connection?
