LOGINSERVER and nltest /dsgetdc

I'm trying to find the server used for login and get a different server when I use:
echo %LOGINSERVER%

versus
nltest /dclist:my.domain

Both are correct in the sense that they both commands show a local server and should be used at one time or the other, but not sure the reason for the different results. Should I just stick with the nltest command?

If I want to know what server I'm currently using for login, wouldn't the value for the session (LOGONSERVER) tell me that. Or am I misunderstanding your comment?
