Remote access to ESXi 6 free with USB modem
Remote access to ESXi 6 free with USB modem
Dear Colleagues,
I have free basic license of VMware vSphere 6 Hypervisor Licensed for 2 physical CPUs (unlimited cores per CPU) and basic USB 3G/4G modem that supports Windows OS.
My goal is to get remote access to Windows VM using this USB modem (Huawei E3372h-153) when ESXi host is powered on.
For example, during a power outage, after the server powered on I need this algorithm (or something similar to this).
1) All VMs start automatically.
2) USB modem that is connected to USB port of the physical server (HP Proliant DL360 Gen9) automatically connects to the specific Windows VM after VM startup.
So is it possible to configure these thigs with free ESXi license and if yes – how to do it?
Thanx in advance.

Install some vpn server, that 'modem' does not do ppp end-to-end, it just 'dials' into 3g/4g stack using ATD*99#

Thank You very much, Mr. Andrew! Because of your advices I've accomplished the task!
In my case the difficulties were that the modem need to be configured to "only modem mode" by special AT command in order to esxi can recognise it and the drivers should be from huawei and not from mobile network operator .

HOW TO: Add and Connect a USB Device to a Virtual Machine, hosted on VMware vSphere Hypervisor ESX 4.1 ESXi 4.1, ESXi 5.0
As for starting VMs automatically, that's easy, and can be seen here
Auto Start and Shutdown Virtual Machines
Just log into your ESX server using the vSphere GUI Client, click on the host, then click the Configuration tab. In the 'Software' box, click the Virtual Machine Startup/Shutdown link. In the upper right click Properties.
