Port forwarding with Hughesnet
Has anybody had luck port forwarding using hughesnet gen4? Â I have a camera system I am trying to port forward to and even tried dynamic dns without luck. Â It may just be that it can't be done. Â http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r28373038-how-to-port-forwarding-with-hughes-satellite-internet
The camera NVR is set to TCP port 3777, UDP 37778 and HTTP 37776. Â
I have the router port forwarded to tcp 37776 to the local ip of the NVR.
I can surf to my internal ip and see the NVR. Â There is also another ip that I think begins with 100.xx.xx.xx that I was able to surf to as well. But that is an internal IP.
I can use a screen share service like screenconnect or team viewer. Â What I may be left with is hooking up an old computer with screenconnect and just use that to view the NVR. Â That will be a last option though. Â The public facing IP however, does not work and the explanation in the link above may just explain that.

I agree the speeds are not too quick. Â The Gen4 speeds I think are 15 down/2 up. Â The only way to get a static IP is using the older modems and that has a max download speed of 5 and I'm not sure what the upload speed is. Â
From the research I have done, it seems like the public IP is shared among multiple users and is also somewhat arbitrary. Â If the IP is shared somehow, it would make sense that port forwarding would not work.
In the next day or 2 I will set up ScreenConnect on an old computer attached to the router and that may give me an indication of speed.

How did things turn out?

As pointed out (and as expected) satellite is not worth pursuing.  At minimum, there is a 600 millisecond delay (which also means you can't use  it for credit card processing), there is also a data limit just like your cell service.  There is an option to go with a static IP, but that means going to an older and slower modem.
The final choice was to go with VZW's unlimited plan (which is not 100% unlimited) but should do the trick for what we need. Â Using a Cradlepoint fall back router. Â They are on the pricey side, but working well and just had to insert a SIM card to make it work. Â The router VZW offered was a month out from being delivered.
Thank you to all!
